LINK is a program at AHS that allows all students to go on a three week internship during April and May for three weeks of their junior year. LINK gives students a chance to try a potential career before they make decisions about college.
Where was my LINK?
My LINK ended up being at Weaselskin Equestrian. Weaselskin Equestrian is a farm where 28 horses are raised. All except two horses/ponies are the breed Lipizzan and Andalusian. During my internship I helped Jennifer (the owner of Weaselskin) with feeding the horses, I filled the horses water, I learned about the horses mind and body, I helped trim feet and pick them, I groomed brushes, I learned to lead, ride and lounge, and I also learned a few other things that don't have to do with horses.
Buisness Description of Weaselskin Equestrian
"Your southwest center for equestrian education and home of many Lipizzans and Andalusians bred and for sale in true combined training. We provide riding lessons, training assistance and over all equine education for all disciplines with focus on dressage, jumping, eventing, combined driving and balanced riding. We not just about competition but for a well balanced connection between you and your horse that be utilized in the show ring or on the mountain trail." Weaselskin Equestrian
LINK Project
For my LINK project I compared the philosophy between Dr. Robert Miller and classical riders. I made a presentation that took quotes from two different books and I told the pros and cons between both philosophies. Link Project

Today I am going to email one (possibly two) of my options to see if I can intern there. I am feeling a little bit of stress because almost everyone I know has their mentor and I still haven't gotten mine yet. The first place I am going to email is the Durango Humane society and see how it goes.

I have only had one idea for my LINK so far and that is to go to "Sea Life Park" in Hawaii. I could intern there and help them with all the animals they have there. They have a whole separate page that is all about interning, but so far all I have seen is interning for college students. My other options were interning for places that work with rescue animals or places like the humane society. I could intern with places that work with dogs or horses. If I get accepted for one of these internships I would be really excited but also really nervous because these internships are like taking a step into the real world and becoming an adult. They are like professional jobs even though you aren't getting paid for them they are still important, but it still makes me anxious about it. I think I will do a good job at whatever internship I get.

So far I have emailed five people. I emailed the Humane Society and they didn't have any room left for more interns. I also emailed Wolf-wood and they never got back to me. I emailed three horse therapy places, Durango Equine Therapy, Joy Rides, and Cadence Therapeutic Riding Center. Durango Equine Therapy and Joy Rides replied and said they couldn't have any interns and Cadence Therapeutic Riding Center has not replied to my email yet. Now I am researching more places that have to do with animals, for example, Spring Creek Horse Rescue, Aspentree Animal Caring Center, and Alpine Animal Hospital. I am going to email Spring Creek Horse Rescue today and see what happens. If that internship doesn't work out then I will email Aspentree Animal Caring Center and Alpine Animal Hospital.
